Four obligations attached to a till
In Germany a till is not a calculator, it is evidence. These are the four things it has to do.
TSE signature§ 146a AO
Every transaction is signed through Fiskaly's certified cloud TSE, with one TSE per location and no second piece of hardware.
Issue a receipt§ 146a (2) AO
Every transaction gets a receipt, printed or as a QR code on the customer's phone.
Register the till§ 146a (4) AO
The system assembles what the tax office needs, with the serial number and the TSE details.

Walk-ins without an account
Someone coming in without an appointment is recorded as a name on a booking, not as a customer account. No mailbox, no login, no history.
They take the receipt themselves via the QR code — still available from the daily journal two months later.
What the till does day to day
Cash, card, voucher
Every payment method recorded in one transaction, each with its own entry in the journal.
Split the bill
Two people, one appointment, paying separately. Cash and card can be mixed.
Gift vouchers
Sell, redeem and carry a remaining balance. A voucher only becomes revenue when it is redeemed.
Cancellations and refunds
A refund gets its own signature, traceably chained to the original receipt.
When the network drops
Without internet the till takes no money and says so clearly, because every receipt needs a TSE signature. Once the connection is back, you carry on.
Daily closing
Count sheet, cash difference and journal in one step, every evening.
A language per person
Each staff member picks their own language. The receipt stays in the location's language.
On your tablet
An iPad or Android tablet is enough. A card reader only comes in if you want to take cards.
Tips kept separate
A tip is not the business's revenue. It is recorded separately, assigned to the person, and is booked separately from revenue in the accounts.
Do I need hardware for this?
For cash, the tablet is enough. For card payments you add a reader, ordered directly from Stripe.

What do I show during a cash audit?
The individual records in DSFinV-K format, the TSE export and the process documentation. You pull the TSE export and the process documentation out of the system yourself.
Does the TSE cost extra?
Yes. In Germany every till needs its own TSE, so you add the TSE module for each location. You see the price in the dashboard and on the pricing page as soon as it can be booked. How many receipts you issue makes no difference.
Do you register my till with the tax office?
You file it yourself through ELSTER. Everything you need for it is ready in the dashboard.
What happens if the internet goes down?
Then the till takes no payment and shows that clearly. Every receipt needs a TSE signature, which only works online. Once the network is back, you carry on.
Do I have to buy hardware?
No. The terminal runs on an iPad or Android tablet you already have. A card reader is optional.
Which card reader do I need?
The Stripe Reader S700 or the BBPOS WisePad 3. You order either directly from Stripe out of the dashboard.
Can two customers pay separately?
Yes. The bill can be split, and the parts can use different payment methods.
Can I keep my old till?
Technically yes, but then you have two tills and two journals. An audit wants to see both, and reconciling them is work.
