Your Own Domain for Your Website
Connect your own domain to your Terminz website, which DNS records to set with your provider, what the add-on costs and what happens if you cancel.
In the dashboard
- Menu
- Marketing & website → Website & Google → Your website → Own domain
- Who
- Managers with the “Change Business Settings” permission, starting with the Komplett plan. Entering, verifying, and removing a domain also requires “Edit Public Business Page.” Only the owner can subscribe to, cancel, or reactivate the add-on module.
Your Own Domain for Your Website
With your own domain, your website and booking system will run under your own address, for example dein-salon.de, and no longer under the Terminz address. You can find the page in the menu under Marketing & website → Website & Google → Your website → Own domain (/manager/marketing/website/domain) and via the line “Own domain” on page “Set Up, Publish, and Share Your Website”.
A custom domain is a paid add-on module with its own subscription in addition to your plan. You purchase the domain itself from a domain provider; Terminz does not sell domains. Your email address with that provider remains where it is: Terminz only changes the settings for the website.
The domain applies to the location selected at the top of the dashboard. If you have multiple locations, there's an additional selection option “Select business” at the top of the page.
The Process in Four Steps
Next to the title, a small help icon (“How your website moves to your domain”) explains the steps:
- Enter the domain. For example,
dein-salon.de, without www. - Set up the entry with your provider. The button for your provider takes you directly to your domains. There are usually two entries: one for www and one for the domain without www. If someone else is doing this for you, forward these instructions to them.
- Wait a moment. The page refreshes automatically; you don't need to reload it. It usually takes a few minutes, rarely up to a day.
- Live. You'll receive an email. Your website and booking system are now running under your domain, and the old address redirects to it.
Don't have a domain yet?
Below the input field is the “No domain yet?” button. It opens a recommendation: IONOS (German interface, usually a few euros for the first year) with the “Search for a domain at IONOS” button, or alternatively Namecheap with “Search for a domain at Namecheap” (interface and support in English only). Search for your desired name there, purchase the domain, and return to this page. It's not yet possible to purchase a domain directly through Terminz.
Enter the domain and book the module
As long as no domain is linked yet, the page displays the card “Your domain” with the field Domain (placeholder dein-salon.de) and the button Continue.
- You can enter
dein-salon.de,www.dein-salon.de, orhttps://followed by the name. Terminz will read the name from this. - A domain without a subdomain always appears as
www.<domain>. The old address will then automatically redirect to your domain; a preview shows this below the field. A subdomain likebuchen.dein-salon.deappears exactly as you enter it. - You cannot leave this field blank: “Enter your domain first.”. Anything that is not a domain results in “That does not look like a domain. Example: your-salon.com”.
- Terminz addresses (
terminz.com,terminz.de) andbornwerk.comare not allowed. If the domain already belongs to another business on Terminz, the message “This domain is already in use by another business” will appear.
Without a booked module, Continue opens window “Book custom domain” instead of establishing the connection. If the module is already running, the domain is connected directly.
The “Book custom domain” window
At the top, your domain is displayed with Replace (back to the input screen). Then:
- Who sets up the domain? “I'll do it myself” is free; you enter the records yourself with the provider, and Terminz shows you exactly which ones. “Terminz sets up” costs the displayed amount plus sales tax as a one-time fee; Terminz will then contact you and enter the records for you. If you've set up the domain before, this option is skipped, and there's no new setup fee.
- A list shows “Setup, one-time”, “Monthly, from today”, and “Due today”. The amounts are always listed exactly there; they are subject to change. All prices are plus sales tax. A personal domain is a separate subscription with its own invoice; it starts today—even during the trial period—and is paid for with the card associated with your plan.
- Under “Terminz sets up,” you can redeem a Voucher code (“Redeem a voucher code”). A valid code reduces the setup fee (“Code applies: …% off the setup.”); a different one results in “This code does not apply to custom domain.”
- You must check the box indicating that you are booking “Own Domain” in accordance with the Terms and Conditions (Section B.4a). It also states there that you can cancel the module at the end of each billing month, that the domain will remain connected for another 30 days afterward, then redirect to your Terminz page for 90 days, and finally be released. The link “Terms as PDF” opens the terms and conditions.
- Book and pay remains inactive until you check the box. After that, payment is processed immediately and the domain is linked. If something goes wrong, “The booking did not go through. Nothing was charged. Try again in a moment.” will appear there
If the page doesn't prompt you to book
Instead of the input field, you may see a note:
- “Not bookable right now”: Terminz only enables “Own Domain” for as many locations as can be adequately managed. Your page will remain accessible at the Terminz address.
- “All places are taken”: Fully booked until spots become available again.
- “Custom domain comes with your plan”: You haven't selected a plan yet. The Open subscription button takes you to the subscription settings (see “Subscription and Invoices from Terminz”).
- “The owner books this”: The module costs money; only the owner can book it.
- “Your payment is still being processed”: A payment has not yet been processed. Once it's processed, the module is booked; otherwise, you won't be charged.
Set Up Entries with the Domain Provider
After connecting, the page displays the map showing your domain, its status, and the entries. Depending on the phase, the status is:
- “Finding your provider”: Terminz is checking where your domain is located. Afterward, you'll see the appropriate entries.
- “Waiting for your records”: You need to make a change with the provider.
- “Issuing certificate”: The entries are in place; the certificate usually takes just a few minutes.
- “Needs help”: The setup didn't work.
For each entry, you'll see Type, Host, and Value, each with Duplicate. Usually, this is a CNAME for www and, if the domain is to be accessible without “www,” a second entry for @ (the domain without “www”). The type for @ depends on the provider (ALIAS, otherwise A and AAAA records). If there are already records for www or @—such as a parked page or a redirect—replace them with these. Email records (MX) remain as they are.
Terminz recognizes the provider. For known providers, there is:
- a “Set up automatically with <provider>” button, if the provider supports it; “Or add them by hand” takes you to the list;
- a quick guide with “Help with <provider>” and “Go to <provider>” buttons. Guides are available for IONOS, STRATO, united-domains, Namecheap, GoDaddy, Cloudflare, ALL-INKL, Hetzner, and netcup. For Cloudflare, set the proxy status of each record to “DNS only.”
If Terminz doesn't recognize the provider, the page asks, “Where did you purchase your domain?” and offers a list of providers to choose from.
Check
The page checks automatically. The time of the last check is shown below (“last checked … min ago”). Use Check now (or Check again after an error) to start the check immediately. After that, it takes about ten seconds before you can check again. If an error occurs, it will show “The check could not be started.”
Errors are labeled as follows: “The DNS record doesn't point to Terminz yet.”, “The certificate could not be issued.”, or “We couldn't set up your domain.”. If Terminz has been waiting for the entries for a while, “We have been waiting … days for the records.” appears with the option to request help.
Someone else is setting it up
Below the entries, you'll see “Someone else sets this up?”. Send the instructions to the person who manages your domain; they don't need a Terminz account to do this. Options include Copy link, Share (on a phone), and Send by email with the field Email address and the button Send. After that, “Instructions sent to ….” appears. A maximum of three such emails are sent per day.
Help from Terminz
The Ask Terminz for help button opens “Should we set up the domain for you?”. Once you confirm, Terminz creates a ticket (“Ticket #… is open, we'll get back to you.”), contacts you, and sets up the entries with you. The domain, your provider, and your email address for the reply are included in the message.
If the module is running and you're handling the setup yourself, the page may also offer to handle the setup: “Rather not touch the records yourself?” using the “Have it set up for …” button. Only the owner can place the order; for everyone else, “Only the owner can order the setup.” appears there. After the order is placed, “Terminz is setting up your domain” appears; Terminz will contact you via messages and go live with the domain as soon as the entries are in place.
Once the domain is live
The map displays your domain with the address, along with options to copy and open it. Below that, it says: “<old address> automatically redirects here.” If your website isn't published, it says “The address is connected, but your website isn't visible yet. Until then, visitors see an error page here.” instead, with the Make website visible button. It leads to “Set Up, Publish, and Share Your Website”.
Canceling the module
Above the domain, there's a line showing the module's status, for example “… a month · booked on …”. If Terminz has activated it for you, it will say “Unlocked by Terminz, free of charge”; you cannot cancel this yourself.
- Cancel module opens “Cancel custom domain?”. The module ends at the end of the current billing month. After that, the domain remains connected for another 30 days and then redirects to your Terminz page for 90 days. Until the end, you can continue using Withdraw cancellation.
- After cancellation, “Custom domain is cancelled and runs until …” appears.
- If the domain is not yet live when the term expires, it will be released and there will be no redirect.
- After the module ends, it shows “From … your domain forwards to your Terminz page” with Book again. If you renew, the domain remains your website without interruption and without needing to be set up again. For a redirect (“… forwards to your Terminz page”), the button is labeled “Book custom domain again”. If nothing is available for booking, the redirect will continue regardless.
Remove Domain
At the bottom of the page, you'll see Remove domain (“Remove domain?”); click Remove to confirm.
- An active domain: Your website will then be accessible again at the Terminz address. You can delete the entries with the provider afterward.
- A domain in the setup process: the setup is canceled.
- A redirect set to end at the end of the module: it ends immediately, and the domain is released.
- The module continues to run until you cancel it: If the module is running, the prompt also displays: “The custom domain module keeps running until you cancel it.”
After that, it will show “Domain removed.”
