Manage devices: pair a till tablet, register a reader
Pair a till tablet with a code, approve, lock and configure it, register a card reader, change its home screen and generate the admin passcode.
In the dashboard
- Menu
- Settings → Devices & hardware → Devices & hardware
- Who
- Managers. Any manager at the location may pair, approve, lock, and configure a tablet. For readers, the home screen, and the admin passcode, the “Add/Configure Terminal Devices” permission and the Komplett Kasse or Enterprise plan are also required. The page appears only as long as “Enable terminal” is enabled in the settings.
Manage Devices and Card Readers: Pair a POS Tablet, Register a Reader, Home Screen
On this page, you manage the devices used for processing payments at your location: the POS tablets with the POS app and, if your plan includes card payments, the card readers. You'll find them under Settings → Devices & hardware → Devices & hardware (/manager/terminal/devices). You don't set who is allowed to log in to the POS app here; instead, you do so on page “Till app” (see “Manage POS App”). The button “Till app” in the top-right corner of the page takes you there.
This page is only available as long as “Enable terminal” is enabled in the settings overview. The question mark next to the title opens the same instructions “How till access works” as on the Till App page.
The page from top to bottom
- Card payments at the till: Only visible when something is missing (see below).
- Card readers: The list of your scanners with “Add reader”, the home screen, and the device menu. Only available in the Complete POS or Business plans.
- POS tablets: The tablets with the POS app, including “Refresh” and “Add device”.
If card payments are not included in the (Komplett) plan, the page displays only the “POS tablets” section.
Pair a POS Tablet
- In section “POS tablets”, tap Add device. If no tablet is currently connected, the same button appears blank (“Generate a pairing code to pair a new terminal device”).
- A box appears with Pairing code in uppercase, a countdown timer, and the buttons Duplicate and Close. The code consists of three words, is valid for ten minutes, and is limited to five codes per hour. When it expires, the box disappears with the message “The pairing code has expired. Please generate a new one.”. Less than a minute before it expires, the timer turns yellow.
- Enter the code into the tablet's till app.
- The tablet appears in the list with the status Pending approval. A newly paired tablet remains inactive until you approve it here with Approve. After that, the message “Device approved successfully” appears.
What a tablet row displays
- the name (or the device ID if no name is available), the status Online, Offline, or Pending approval
- below that, the device type, operating system, and app version, for example, “v1.0.3”
- Today's figures: “Today 3 transactions · €120.00” and “Last seen” with date and time
- For open receipts, a line “1 receipt waiting to sync” (yellow) or “1 receipt not synced” (red). These are receipts that the tablet has not yet sent to Terminz.
- Connected devices (receipt printer, cash drawer, barcode scanner) with “Online,” “Offline,” or “Error.” They only appear if the tablet reports them.
The list refreshes automatically when changes are made on the device. If you don't have a live connection, it checks for updates every two minutes. Refresh forces an immediate refresh.
Actions on the Tablet
- Approve: only for “Pending approval”.
- Configure: opens “Device configuration” (below).
- Three-dot menu: Deactivate (for an active, approved tablet), Reactivate (for a deactivated one), and Revoke token.
Revoke token prompts for (“Revoke token?”: “The device will be immediately signed out and must be re-paired.”) and immediately ends the current session. After that, you'll need a new pairing code.
Device Configuration
Configure opens the “Device configuration” window with these fields:
- Device name: The name in the list. Leave blank, and the list will display the device ID.
- Currency: Euro, U.S. Dollar, British Pound, or Swiss Franc.
- Language: German or English.
- Session timeout (s): Seconds the till app may stay in the background or with the screen off before the login ends. Allowed: 60 to 28,800, default 600.
- Idle timeout (s): Seconds without any input in the open app after which it locks. Allowed: 10 to 3,600, default 120.
If a value is outside the allowed range, the field shows the range and Save stays disabled.
The block “Payment & receipt” holds three switches:
- Card payment: enables card payments on this tablet via a Stripe card reader.
- Receipt printer: prints the receipt on this device's receipt printer after payment.
- Cash drawer: opens the drawer on a cash payment.
Pressing Save configuration closes the window and reloads the list. The note below the list (“Whether a till uses a receipt printer and a cash drawer is set in its device configuration.”) points to exactly these two switches.
Setting Up a Card Reader
Card “Card payments at the till” shows three steps required before the checkout can accept card payments: Stripe, POS mode, and Reader. It disappears once all three steps are complete. The remaining step has a button:
- Stripe: “The Stripe account is not live yet — without it no reader can take payments.” The button takes you to the payment page, where you can link your account.
- POS mode: “POS mode is off. While it is off the terminal takes no payments.” The Turn on POS mode button takes you to the “Full POS mode” tab on the checkout app page.
- Reader: “Only the reader is missing — after that the till can take cards.” The Add reader button opens the form.
Register a Reader
In section “Card readers”, Add reader opens window “Register reader” (“Enter the pairing code and assign it to this location”). The window explains: The code is shown on the reader's display. On the S700, swipe in from the left edge of the screen to open Settings. The WisePad 3 connects directly to the POS app via Bluetooth and does not require a code.
- Enter Pairing code—three words such as “quick-yellow-rapid.” The page automatically adjusts for uppercase letters and spaces. The Register button remains disabled as long as the field is empty.
- Enter a Account. The device will appear at the register under this name. If you leave it blank, the app will use “Register 1,” “Register 2” for the second device, and so on.
- Tap Register. After that, “Reader registered” and “It belongs to this location from now on.” will appear. The POS app will detect the scanner as soon as the tablet and the device are on the same network. Another reader refreshes the form, and Done closes it.
If an error occurs, the cause is displayed in the window, often with a button labeled “Go there”:
- “The country is missing from the location's address.”, “Stripe needs the full address of the location: street, number, postcode and city.”, or “Street and house number are missing from the location's address.”: Add the address under “Address” (see “Address and Contact”).
- “This location has no Stripe account connected yet.” or “The Stripe account is not activated yet.”: Link the account first.
- “Stripe did not accept the code. Pairing codes expire after a few minutes — generate a new one on the device.”
The Reader List
Each row shows the name, model (for example, “Stripe S700,” “BBPOS WisePad 3”), serial number, IP address, and firmware, as well as “Last seen”. The status is Active, Offline (Stripe is currently unable to reach the device), or Deactivated.
Deactivate requires confirmation by entering the device name (“Deactivate reader”). The device will be removed from Stripe, will immediately stop accepting card payments, and you'll need a new pairing code from the device to use it again.
If no reader is registered, “No card reader yet” and “Without a reader the till only takes cash.” will be displayed.
Reader Home Screen
Below the list is the block Splash screen: the image displayed by a Stripe S700 reader when in standby mode. If no custom image is set, it displays “Terminz default image. Upload your own.”. This applies to all readers at the location (“Applies to 2 readers.”); the WisePad 3 does not have a display for this.
- Tap Choose image (or drag an image onto the preview field). PNG and JPG files up to 10 MB are allowed. The page rejects larger images with “The image is larger than 10 MB.”.
- The preview “Set splash screen” displays the image in 1080 × 1920 px format. Other sizes will be cropped to the center. If the image is smaller, the preview will display a warning (“The image is scaled up and may look blurry.”).
- Use this image saves the image. The reader will display the new image within 10 minutes. Until then, the old image will still be visible, so do not upload it again.
Replace replaces the image; Remove undoes the change (“The splash screen will be removed. Your readers go back to the Terminz default image.”).
The Reader Menu and the Admin Passcode
The line Device menu (“Passcode, language, Wi-Fi — everything that only works on the device itself.”) opens “The menu on the reader”, an eight-step guide: access the menu, set the language to German, connect to Wi-Fi, customize the display, generate a pairing code, check device information, send a device report, and “Advanced” (factory settings; a reset device must be paired again). At the top is Admin passcode, which you enter on the device to access the menu. It is initially hidden; Show and Duplicate reveal it.
The passcode applies to all card readers at the location. As long as the Stripe factory passcode is still set there, the page will display a warning (“It's listed in their public documentation and is the same on every card reader—create your own.”). Generate new prompts you to enter a new one and creates it. The reader will recognize it within 10 minutes; until then, the old one remains valid. Write it down before you go to the device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I pair a new point-of-sale tablet? Settings → Devices & Hardware → Devices & Hardware, Add device, enter the code on the tablet, then Approve.
The tablet is paired but cannot process payments. It's set to “Pending approval”, is deactivated, or the user's account is locked. Check the status in the list and then verify the PIN on the POS app page.
How do I immediately deactivate a lost tablet? In the three-dot menu Revoke token. This immediately logs the device out.
How do I enable card payments? You must be on the Complete Till or Business plan, have a Stripe account linked, have “Full POS mode” enabled, and have a card reader registered. To do this, enable it in the device settings under “Card payment”.
Where do I set up the receipt printer and cash drawer? In the tablet's device configuration: Configure, then “Receipt printer” and “Cash drawer” in the block “Payment & receipt”. Automatic receipt printing has no field.
Where do I set the reader's language? Only on the device itself, in the device menu.
The card reader is set to “Offline”. Stripe cannot connect to it. The device must be on the same network as the point-of-sale tablet; it does not support Wi-Fi 6.
