POS System for Hair Salons in Germany

If you run a hair salon in Germany and use any kind of electronic cash register, there's a legal requirement you can't ignore: since January 2020, your POS must have a certified TSE (Technische Sicherheitseinrichtung). No exceptions, no grace periods.

Here's what that means in practice, how much it costs, and which solutions actually work in a salon environment.

Why TSE Exists

Before 2020, electronic POS systems could be manipulated — transactions deleted or changed after the fact. The KassenSichV (Kassensicherungsverordnung) closed that loophole.

Every transaction now has to be signed in real time by a BSI-certified security module. The signature appears on the receipt and is stored tamper-proof. During a tax audit, you have to be able to show those signatures.

Who does this apply to? Any salon with an electronic cash register or POS software — regardless of size or revenue. The only exception is a completely manual cash drawer with zero software involvement, which isn't realistic if you're using any booking or client management tool.

What Happens If You Don't Have TSE?

Tax authorities can do unannounced POS spot checks (Kassennachschau). If you can't produce TSE-compliant receipts, the consequences stack up fast:

  • Fines of up to €25,000 per violation (§ 379 AO)
  • Revenue gets estimated by tax authorities — almost always higher than actual
  • Higher risk of a full audit for the following years

A couple of fines can put a small salon in a difficult position.

Hardware TSE vs Cloud TSE

Hardware TSE is a physical USB module that connects to your register. One-time cost of €100–300, certificate expires after a few years and needs renewal. If it breaks or goes missing, your POS is no longer compliant until you replace it.

Cloud TSE (like Fiskaly, used by Terminz) handles signing remotely via a BSI-certified service. No hardware, no installation, no renewal. It just works — and if the provider updates their certification, you don't need to do anything.

For most salons, cloud TSE is the lower-maintenance option. It's also what's included in Terminz at no extra cost.

What Every Compliant Receipt Must Include

This isn't optional — each receipt needs:

  • Transaction number
  • TSE serial number
  • Timestamp (transaction start and end)
  • Signature counter
  • The TSE signature itself

If your current system doesn't print all of these, it's not compliant — regardless of what the provider told you.

Common Questions

Do I need a physical terminal? Not necessarily. A tablet or phone with the right software and a card reader works. Terminz runs on iOS and Android with card payment support and compliant receipt printing.

What about SumUp or iZettle? These are payment processors, not POS systems. Used alone, they typically don't meet KassenSichV because they don't sign transactions with a BSI-certified TSE. If you're using one, check with your Steuerberater.

Can I keep my existing register and just add TSE? If it supports TSE modules and still gets software updates — maybe. If it's older, you'll likely need to replace the whole system. Terminz migrates data from most existing systems for free, and most salons are set up within a day.

Is TSE included in Terminz pricing? Yes. Fiskaly Cloud TSE is included in the standard price. No extra fee, no separate contract with Fiskaly.

Switching from a non-compliant setup doesn't have to be complicated. Terminz is free to try for 30 days — POS, TSE, booking, and client management included.
